Melechesh

• Genre(s): Black Metal
• Representative Albums: "Sphynx," "Emissaries," "Djinn"

Biography

Originally a solo project established in 1993 by vocalist/guitarist Melechesh Ashmedi, Melechesh -- the band -- were one of the first death metal/black metal groups to emerge from the city of Jerusalem. Guitarist Moloch and drummer Lord Curse were recruited the following year, and Melechesh quickly began developing their admittedly extreme but culturally relevant "Mesopotamian metal" by combining Middle Eastern music and history with heavy metal. By naming their first demo As Jerusalem Burns...Al' Intisar and openly admitting to Satanic worship in interviews, Melechesh understandably gained both local notoriety and a police rap sheet, seeing as such heretical behavior is literally illegal in that holiest of cities. Then again, there's no such thing as bad press, and all of this hullabaloo only served to fuel the band's fast-rising underground profile, and scored Melechesh the opportunity to release their The Siege of Lachish EP via the Devilish Music Propaganda label.

Come 1996, with bassist Al'Hazred having joined their merry crew, Melechesh also agreed to re-record As Jerusalem Burns for an official CD release, but, more than anything else, this inauspicious debut mostly served to prove that Melechesh's musical abilities had yet to catch up to the controversy that preceded them. By then, their geographic location had also become a limiting factor, Jerusalem not exactly being known for its bustling music industry. So, having tired of nearly impossible working conditions and rare concert opportunities, beginning in 1998 the members of Melechesh, minus drummer Lord Curse, started migrating to Continental Europe: Moloch to France, the other two to the Netherlands. Then, after securing a new record deal with French independent Osmose Productions, Melechesh achieved a major coup when they convinced renowned Absu drummer Proscriptor (real name Russ Givens) to perform on their international debut, 2001's Djinn.

In the end, the long wait had been well worth it, since this landmark release most certainly met, even exceeded, prior expectations for the band's vaunted "Mesopotamian metal." A string of international concert dates followed, and a promo video was even recorded for the track "Genies, Sorcerers and Mesopotamian Nights" before Melechesh finally took some time off to bask in their newfound underground fame. Three years later, they were back with another acclaimed album named Sphynx, and after welcoming new drummer Xul (real name Yuri Rinkel), Melechesh unleashed arguably their finest opus to date in late 2006, entitled Emissaries.

In the following year, guitarist Moloch and drummer Lord Curse were added to the line-up. The band’s goal was to create a type of black metal incorporating extensive Middle Eastern influences mainly based on Mesopotamian/Sumerian and occult themes (both musically and lyrically); the band invented the title "Mesopotamian Metal" to best describe their type of metal.

The band’s goal was to create a type of black metal incorporating extensive Middle Eastern influences mainly based on Mesopotamian/Sumerian and occult themes (both musically and lyrically); the band invented the title "Mesopotamian Metal" to best describe their type of metal.

The band’s release in 1995 of the official demo As Jerusalem Burns... and 7" EP The Siege of Lachish attracted attention from both underground metal fans and local authorities. Melechesh were accused of "Dark Cult activities" by the law enforcement authorities of the city of Jerusalem, especially by a frontpage newspaper article which twisted some facts. The charges were eventually dropped.
In 1996, The band released their debut album As Jerusalem Burns...Al´Intisar on an American black metal record label; then newly recruited bassist Al´Hazred completed the line-up.

Due to various personal and professional reasons, the band members were forced to relocate to France and the Netherlands in 1998. Lord Curse remained in Jerusalem and later moved to the USA to continue with his Art studies, thus requiring the band to recruit a new drummer. Absu mainman and drummer Proscriptor soon filled the vacant position. From that point on, Melechesh have released two full-length albums: Djinn (2001), dealing with Mesopotamian mythology, and Sphynx (2003), dealing with Mesopotamian/Sumerian mythology while always keeping the dark and Near Eastern occult themes close to their hearts. Recently, the band recorded their fourth album Emissaries which is available in Europe (Osmose Productions) and by The End Records in the United States and Canada . Meanwhile, Xul has replaced Proscriptor as the band’s fulltime drummer. Additionally, Proscriptor, while no longer in the band, plans to re-release The Siege of Lachish on his label, Tarot Productions, also in 2007.On the 2nd of May 2009,the band played for the first time in Dubai at the Sandstorm Festival playing alongside Bilocate and Kaoteon.

Origins

The band started their career in Jerusalem (and Bethlehem) and operated from there between 1993–1997; however, they have resided mainly in Amsterdam throughout most of their career. Currently the band is made up of three ethnicities, none of them of Israeli (whether Jewish or Arab) origin: Armenian/Assyrian (Ashmedi), Palestinian (Moloch), Dutch (Xul)

Antestor " The Christian Black Metal"

Formed: 1990
Genre(s): Black Metal (Christian)
Representative Albums: Martyrium, The Return of the Black Death, The Forsaken

Antestor is a Christian extreme metal band formed in 1990 in Jessheim, Norway. The group is credited for starting the whole northern European Christian extreme metal scene with their 1991 demo The Defeat of Satan, according to the liner notes of the writer Michael Bryzak on the band's compilation album of the same title.

Antestor is the only Christian band to have an album released by Cacophonous Records, which has also released records by bands such as Dimmu Borgir, Sigh, and Cradle of Filth. In the 1990s, Antestor, together with Horde, were the only two Christian black metal groups who had a record deal with a secular label. The band's only release on Cacophonous, The Return of the Black Death, proved influential for the Christian black metal movement, and has sold over 10,000 copies. During that time, they dubbed their musical style as "sorrow metal" rather than black metal because the black metal movement was publicly affiliated with Satanism in Norway. According to HM Magazine, the progressive elements on the debut album, Martyrium, were possibly ahead of their time in the Norwegian extreme metal scene.

The group has gone through several line-up changes over the years, and currently Antestor consists only of the founding guitarist Lars Stokstad (Vemod) and vocalist Ronny Hansen (Vrede). The original vocalist Kjetil Molnes (Martyr) and drummer Svein Sander (Armoth) left the band around 2000, when the members of a fellow Norwegian black metal group, Vaakevandring, joined Antestor. The reputive Norwegian extreme metal drummer Jan Axel Blomberg (Hellhammer) played session drums for their 2005 album The Forsaken and Det Tapte Liv EP.

Biography

Crush Evil era

In 1990, the band was formed under the name "Crush Evil" by Lars Stokstad, Kjetil Molnes, and Erling Jørgensen in Jessheim, Norway. Paul W joined them as a drummer later on. Back then, the band's music style was a mixture of death metal, doom metal, and thrash metal. In 1991, they recorded and released their first demo, The Defeat of Satan, which contains three songs and an outro. The band is Christian and over the course of their career have received serious death threats because of this. A reviewer describes: "During the time the Norwegian black metal inner circle was rearing its ugly head, Antestor was stirring things up by playing extreme metal that spoke of hope in Jesus Christ and the deception of Satan."

The existence of the band itself caused a debate in the metal underground. For example, during the early 1990s, Bård Faust of Emperor brought up the subject when he discussed with Euronymous, guitarist/vocalist from the seminal black metal band Mayhem, in his zine Orcustus about the Norwegian scene.[8] Faust asked: "Don't you think that something is terribly wrong when it has gone so far that we have a Christian "death metal" band here (Crush Evil)? Any advice on how we should kill them?"[8] Euronymous replied to this: "It's bad enough to have a couple of society bands, but a Christian band is too much. But don't worry, we have plans. They will not continue for a very long time."[8] However, the band persevered despite these threats. Antestor was never forced to split apart, and in an almost ironic twist of fate, Jan Axel Blomberg (better known as Hellhammer, the drummer for Mayhem) was Antestor's session drummer on their latest two releases.

Name change

In 1993, Vegard Undal joined the band as a bassist and Svein Sander became their drummer. During that time, they changed the name Crush Evil to Antestor, which is (Latin for "call to witness" or "testify"). Despair was their first self-released demo, and was released under the band name Antestor. The demo starts with an intro and ends with a cover of an old Norwegian hymn, called Jesus, Jesus, Ver Du Hjå Meg ("Jesus, Jesus, Be With Me"). Strawberry Records pressed 600 copies of the recording.

In 1994, Antestor recorded their first full-length album titled Martyrium. Arctic Serenades Records was originally supposed to release that album, but because of unknown reasons that never happened, and the band tried to get another label to release the album. In an interview, the drummer Armoth said: "...we were in contact with a label called Morphine Records. But that was about signing a deal for the Martyrium album. But we never signed a contract but that guy, Burrito, made several promotapes and sold every bit of it illegally 'cause he didn't have a contract." However, the tape copies circulated in up to fifth generation copies and their audience grew fast. Martyrium was the last album that emphasized on their death/doom metal direction.

On June 3, 1994, Antestor appeared on a local television program called "BootlegTV" where youth could practice and experience recording and video production. Usually local bands from Oslo played on that program which was broadcasted on the television station TVNorge. During the course of this program, Antestor played five songs from Martyrium.[13] On June 6, 1995, Antestor was featured on the Norwegian weekly newspaper Morgenbladet's article about the phenomenon of Christian black metal, surrounding the black metal parody controversy of the Australian unblack metal group Horde's 1994 album Hellig Usvart. In the article, vocalist Kjetil Molnes explains the band's stance on if a Christian band can play black metal: "We identify ourselves as black metal as a music style, not black metal as an ideology or belief."

Record deal with Cacophonous Records

In 1997, Antestor recorded a promotional CD titled Kongsblod. The promo-CD caught the interest of British Cacophonous Records, one of the biggest labels with experience in the black metal style and helped established groups such as Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir start their career. Cacophonous signed a record deal for 2 albums with Antestor. In 1998, Cacophonous released Kongsblod under a different name, The Return of the Black Death, and changed the original cover art of a famous Norwegian painting to artwork by Joe Petagno, a well-known American heavy metal cover art creator.

Cacophonous being a secular label releasing material by a band that held Christian beliefs generated some interest in the metal scene. In an interview with Art for the Ears Webzine, published on December 12, 1998, Armoth said: "We sent the CD and a short biography. They just wanted to sign us because of the music. And that's exactly what we wanted to do." 2 years later in a 2000 interview with the Finnish The Christian Underground Zine issue 4, the fanzine's interviewer asked Antestor: "However, you had a record deal with Cacophonous Records (ex-Cradle of Filth, Bal-Sagoth). What kind of experiences did you get from that?" The band replied: "Pretty bad, actually. I can not say they did anything else than released the album. No money, no royalties, nothing." The interviewer also asked: "Did the record company set any demands concerning your image?" Antestor replied: "Nothing like that. They just said that it is not recommendable for us to announce exactly everywhere that we are a Christian band, and they censored the words 'Lord' and 'Jesus' from our lyrics. We ourselves removed a few texts because we did not want to provoke unnecessarily."

Antestor's record deal with Cacophonous Records was valid for years but, according to the band, the label did nothing else aside from publishing their second recording. Cacophonous never paid Antestor their royalties, nor kept contact with them after the album release. There are rumors among metal fans that Antestor was immediately dropped from the label after their Christian beliefs were discovered. However, Antestor has stated otherwise in their interviews. Contrary to general belief, The Return of the Black Death is still part of Cacophonous Records' catalogue and the label has taken new prints of the album.

The Return of the Black Death was mostly well-received by both Christian and non-Christian black metal fans and critics. For example, the British metal magazines Kerrang! and Terrorizer both gave the album 4 points out of 5. Musically, The Return of the Black Death is a mixture of black metal and doom metal. The album relies on hypnotic, cold atmosphere and showcases influences from Norwegian folk music, which led some to label Antestor as Viking metal. Unlike previously, around this time the band themselves said they felt uncertain whether a Christian band can play black metal, because the movement was still strongly associated with Satanism. The drummer Svein Sander says in the 1998 interview:

“We don't even call our music black metal... We call it Atmospheric Sorrow Metal. Because that's more neutral. Then people wouldn't say, "oh, you play black metal, you are Satanists". There really is a sorrow sound, sad sound, in our music. And it's kinda cold, winterly, Nordic in a way.”

Record deal with Endtime Productions

In 2000, Antestor was signed by Endtime Productions, a metal record label that also helped to start the career of the Norwegian metal band Extol. The original vocalist Kjetil Molnes (Martyr) left Antestor. However, the breakup of another Christian metal band in Norway, Vaakevandring, led to several former Vaakevandring members joining Antestor. Namely, Ronny Hansen, adopting the new moniker Vrede, became Antestor's new vocalist, and Morten Sigmund Mageroy (known in Antestor as Sygmoon) stepped in as the new keyboardist. Ann-Mari Edvardsen, who has sung in the Norwegian gothic metal group The Third and the Mortal, joined the band as a female vocalist. For the first time in their career, Antestor began using the infamous corpse paint masks as a part of their live shows and overall image.

In 2000, Endtime Productions released Martyrium with cover art done by the reputive Swedish metal music cover artist Kristian Wåhlin. Antestor toured the United States with Extol that year, playing small venues and finally performing at Cornerstone Festival. Over the next several years, the band remained somewhat quiet; they did not release any more albums until 2003, when they re-released their two earliest demos on one CD, titling it The Defeat of Satan. The drummer, Svein Sander (in Antestor, Armoth), left the band during this time, and Antestor would not find a new full-time drummer for several more years.

In 2004, Antestor changed their style into a more modern black metal, and released their first set of new songs since The Return of the Black Death in an EP called Det Tapte Liv ("The Lost Life"). Det Tapte Liv concentrated less on the black metal aspects of Antestor's style, instead focusing more on instrumental songs. However, it hinted at what the band was preparing for their 2005 full-length, The Forsaken. The cover arts for both releases were once again done by Kristian Wåhlin, and the cover for the EP depicts the Borgund stave church. Hellhammer played all drums on both of these releases. His participation on the recording session caused some controversy among metal press and black metal fans. In an interview with the Russian metal site Metal Library on January 7, 2007, Blomberg says "To be honest, it [playing for Antestor] was a big 'f--- off!' to them all [Mayhem colleagues and record company]. I will repeat again that I decide what I do and I play not only in black metal groups." The band also asked Hellhammer to play live for them, but Blomberg refused. It was not a question about their beliefs, as Hellhammer explains: "In my opinion, black metal today is just music. I will tell you that neither I nor other members of Mayhem never really were against religion or something else. We are primarily interested in music." Ronny Hansen commented on Blomberg's appearance
“First of all Jan Axel "Hellhammer" is a total professional. He started up together with the secular scene and worse (laughs) but he doesn't care if it's secular or Christian. He knew from the start what Antestor stands for. And maybe if we get the chance, we are more than willing to use him again. Cause his drumming is outstanding. I think that he is the very best drummer in the scene and we are just very lucky to have borrowed his brilliance"

Recent years

New drummer Tony Kirkemo joined the band later in 2005 as live session drummer. The band played live shows rarely and only at explicitly Christian music festivals. Examples of performances the group have made in 2000s include the concerts at Bobfest in 2000 in Stockholm and 2004 in Linköping, and at the Nordic Fest 2004 in Oslo.

Some of the members still play in the black metal band Vaakevandring, who played a reunion concert in 2007 together with Antestor at the Endtime Festival held at the end of March 2007 in Halmstad. Antestor performed the concert with numerous session musicians. In this concert the band announced that this is their last live show. In a message in the forum of Endtime Productions, and a substantially identical bulletin on the band's MySpace, Lars Stokstad stated that the reasons for the decision were that the last 2 and half years the only consistent members of the band have been Vrede and Vemod, and they have constantly had problems finding musicians willing to commit to Antestor. Stokstad explained that the band did not want to play at Endtime Festival but the head of Endtime Productions label insistently demanded them to play.

Style

Music

While the band's style on the first publications was primarily death/doom metal with correspondingly slow songs and death growl singing, the band began playing black metal on the 1998 album The Return of the Black Death. On that album the band showcased screaming vocals, tremolo guitar riffs and drum passages with increased speed typical for the black metal genre. Keyboard is also in a central role, which for the typical black metal is used to perform epic interludes and dominates the soundscapes. For example, over the first three minutes of the song "Sorg," only the keyboard melody leads the performance.

With the third album The Forsaken the band developed more in the direction of a more technical style, as it is apparent on the style of The Return of the Black Death. The band's musical development resulted in that The Forsaken includes several guitar solos. This addition received some criticism, and for example Roel de Haan of the Dutch Lords of Metal webzine wrote that "the elaborate solos simply are not beautiful and [are] completely out of context." On that album, Also the quality of production compared to The Return of the Black Death improved. Through the introduction of the two ex-members of Vaakevandring, the style became more melodic and atmospheric. The output also borders on other genres at times; "Circus Brimstone" of Scandinavianmetal.info wrote that "'As I Die,' perhaps, is a whimsical number for Antestor due to the fact that the beginning sounds more suited to power metal than any other genre."

Lyrics

Antestor's lyrical themes include hope and despair, but also deal with the personal Christian faith of the band members. Therefore, many metal fans oppose classifying Antestor's style to the category of black metal, as their lyrics are often contrary to the ideology of black metal. The lyrics are mostly in English. Norwegian texts are also rare for the group, but on the album The Return of the Black Death the Norwegian language dominates the lyrics. On this album, only part of the lyrics are listed in the booklet; words directly referring to Jesus Christ and God were omitted. The song "A Sovereign Fortress" dealt with, for example, the acknowledgments of God who protects and supports the lyrical I since birth. It is portrayed in the chorus of this song as:

“You Are My Hope, O Lord, My Trust, O Lord, Since Boyhood
From Birth I Have Leaned Upon You
My Protector Since I Left My Mother's Womb”

"Sorg" (Norwegian for: grief, sorrow, sadness), however, deals with the themes of the sorrow and the search for hope, with the song based on darker imagery, and the lyrics are not explicitly Christian yet are not negative in the end. An example (in the Norwegian language)

“Hvordan Skal Jeg Kunne Leve
Min Sjel Så Høyt Forhatt
Sorg Er Hva Jeg Føler
Alt Så Ensomt Og Forlatt”

Another song that is also a dark, but this takes on Christian theme, is "Ancient Prophecy". The lyrics tells that the man was sinful, and no one can escape the court of God. Antestor process in their lyrics also topics such as suicide, doubts about the certainty of salvation, and longing death, all of which are rare themes for a Christian band. An example from the text "Betrayed" from the album The Forsaken.

Appearance

Antestor are one of the few bands in the Christian metal scene who use corpse paint in their appearances and on photos. One example is the booklet photos in the album The Return of the Black Death, depicting Antestor in viking outfits and black and white face paints at a snowy Norwegian mountain location. Sometimes the group uses art blood, as known for the session bassist Daniel Ravn Fufjord's (Frosthardr) appearance at the Bobfest 2004 concert. The band explains that corpse paint "is the same for us as masking is for actors or mimes; One way to express certain feelings in the battle we are in. The main purpose is to concentrate on God and not to twist the knife in the wound in side issues like these."

Reception

The specific numbers of Antestor's record sales remain unknown. Generally, the group has always been a "cult favorite" of a small audience rather than a mainstream success: The writer "Circus Brimstone" of Scandinavianmetal.info wrote that

"Antestor has been deified in the Christian metal kingdom, simply because they deliver quality black metal on a consistent basis. Furthermore, only a few other Christian groups have garnered acclaim from the secular community, namely Crimson Moonlight, Horde, and Kekal." Most of the copies of The Return of the Black Death, released on Cacophonous Records, are distributed to mainstream sellers. According to Scott Waters of No Life 'til Metal, the album's first edition sold out almost as soon as it was released. According Vrede in an interview with Intense Radio on December 13, 2007, "by various sources, The Return of the Black Death has sold over 10,000 copies and still keeps selling."

Very few published reviews of the band's albums exist, yet the ones that are available are positive, often good or excellent. Michael Bryzak writes in the liner notes of The Defeat of Satan / Despair that, although the first album was not officially released until 2000, "Martyrium was rightfully considered a cult classic." In a 2006 review of the album, Joel Hemmerling of the Christian metal site The Whipping Post gave the album 95/100, and Matt Morrow of the same site gave The Return of the Black Death 10/10, as he did for The Forsaken. For secular reviews, Lords of Metal gave The Forsaken 75/100, and Nocturnal Horde gave it 8/10, calling it "a very powerful album," and "an amalgamation of innovation, energy, and anger."

The group's position in the Norwegian metal scene was controversial from the beginning. Bryzak writes that "standing up for their faith in Life and Hope, Antestor received serious death threats during this time from some of the major bands and key players of the scene." When asked if the band ever played with other groups in the black metal scene, Antestor said in a 2000 interview with Tcu zine:

"We played with some early form of the band Old Man's Child once. Apparently they expressed their opinion of us with their legs and walked out of the venue during our set." In the liner notes of Martyrium, Antestor corresponds in a slightly bitter tone: "For those of you who despised us, disbelieved in us and misplaced your anger upon us, may God have mercy on your poor souls!"

On Antestor's achievements, Bryzak wrote that "The birth of northern Europe's Christian extreme metal scene can be attributed to only one act, Antestor." As a Christian band, signing with a secular label and releasing their second album on Cacophonous proved influential for the Christian concept of black metal; Matt Morrow writes that "Antestor's The Return of the Black Death" is exactly what the Christian black metal scene needed."[4] Jamie Lee Rake of HM Magazine wrote of the Endtime Productions re-release of Martyrium, wondering if the progressive elements of the album made the band unnoticed innovators in the early Norwegian extreme metal scene:

“Throughout Martyrium’s nine tracks, there are touches of more progressive deathiness: piano and other keyboards, those nearly operatic female vocals, etc. Some of these touches have become nearly commonplace among some of Antestor’s metallic competitors, such as Emperor and their side projects. Might Antestor have been a band of believers who were actually (sit down for this one) innovating in their scene?”

ANCIENT

• Formed: 1992
• Genres: Rock
• Representative Albums: "Halls of Eternity," "The Cainian Chronicle," "Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends"

Biography

Black metal band Ancient began in 1992 as the solo project of guitarist/composer Aphazel, soon expanding to a duo with the addition of vocalist/drummer Grimm; after selling out the entire pressing of their initial demo Eerily Howling Winds, in 1994 the two issued their full-length debut Svartalvheim, followed a year later by the EP Trolltaar. After Grimm's exit, Aphazel relocated from his native Norway to the U.S., forming a new Ancient line-up with vocalists Lord Kaiaphas and Kimberly Grimm as well as drummer Kjetil. Signing to Metal Blade, the band issued 1996's The Cainian Chronicle; of the new roster additions, only Kjetil remained for the 1997 follow-up Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends, recorded with new vocalist Erichte and guitarist/ keyboardist Jesus Christ. Aphazel then moved to Italy, resulting in the exits of Erichte and Kjetil; new vocalist Deadly Kristin and drummer Krigse were installed for Ancient's fourth LP, 1999's The Halls of Eternity.

History

Ancient is a Norwegian black metal band from Eidsvåg, Nesset, formed in 1992. The band has released six full-length albums released by Metal Blade Records. Ancient used to have a raw black metal sound, similar to Darkthrone's works. Beginning with The Cainian Chronicle, they moved towards a more Nordic/atmospheric black metal sound, akin to Emperor. After a period of turmoil concerning their line-up, they went on to add gothic-style instruments such as violins, female vocals, and synthesizers to their music.

The band initially started as a solo project of guitarist Aphazel in 1992. The following year, Grimm joined the band as drummer and vocalist. They released the Eerily Howling Winds demo in 1993 and the Det Glemte Riket EP in 1994. They subsequently signed to Listenable Records and released their debut album, Svartalvheim. After the release of the Trolltaar EP in 1995, Grimm left the band.
Aphazel then moved to the United States where he met Lord Kaiaphas of NSBM band Grand Belial's Key, who soon became the new vocalist and drummer of Ancient. In 1996 the band signed a contract with Metal Blade Records (which led to sellout accusations), and two new members joined the band: Kimberly Goss as a female vocalist and keyboardist, and Kjetil as a drummer. Together, they recorded Ancient's second full-length album The Cainian Chronicle, and later embarked on a European tour. Although Brian Slagel of Metal Blade said he would not sign white power bands and Ancient members contributed to such projects, the band is still signed with the label.

In 1997, Goss was replaced by Erichte, Kjetil left the band, and a new guitarist/keyboardist entered Ancient under the name of Jesus Christ!. With the new lineup, Ancient released their third album, Mad Grandiose Bloodfiends. After a world tour, Aphazel met Deadly Kristin, who became the new female vocalist, and he decided to move to Italy.

1998 brought more lineup changes: Krigse took over the drums, Dhilorz (who later contributed to French NSBM band Ad Hominem as a live member) became the new bassist, and Lord Kaiaphas left the band. In 1999, The Halls of Eternity was released, with Aphazel as the new vocalist. A new tour followed, including the band's first concerts in Scandinavia, and in 2000, Ancient played at Wacken Open Air with new drummer GroM. A compilation EP called God Loves the Dead came out in January 2001.
Ancient's fifth album, Proxima Centauri, was recorded at Los Angered Recording (Andy LaRocque's studio) and mastered at Sterling Sound. It was then released on October 15, 2001. Another tour followed, including Mexico, Eastern Europe and Israel (though the band pretended to be the first foreign black metal band to have played in Israel, the Aeba and Ancient Rites were there before). After the tour, Deadly Kristin decided to leave the band.

On July 13, 2004, Ancient released their sixth album, Night Visit. The album was recorded at Studio Fredman mixed by famous Swedish producer Fredrik Nordström. The band embarked on another European tour called "A Night VisiTour" in 2005, with Illdisposed as co-headliners and Final Breath as support. After the tour, GroM left the band. Ancient's original demos, including Eerily Howling Winds, were re-released in 2005 in an album called Eerily Howling Winds - The Antediluvian Tapes.
Since then, a lull of inactivity that would last three years would come about, and since then Ancient have been dropped from Metal Blade Records. In 2009 they reformed, with Nicholas Barker in tow, to beginning a new set of live shows.

BAL-SAGOTH

Genre(s): Symphonic black metal
Formed : 1993−present

Bal-Sagoth are a symphonic black metal band from Yorkshire, England, formed in 1993.
Originally formed as an epic/symphonic black metal band with strong death metal elements, vocalist/lyricist Byron Roberts took the name 'Bal-Sagoth' from the Robert E. Howard short story "The Gods of Bal-Sagoth". Their first demo was recorded in 1993, and Bal-Sagoth have since released three albums on Cacophonous Records, and three with Nuclear Blast.

History

Early days (1993-1996)

Bal-Sagoth was conceived in 1989 by Byron Roberts, in an attempt to form what he called "A sublimely symphonic black/death metal band swathed in a concept of dark fantasy/science fiction and ancient myths & legends." Inspired by such writers and artists as Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft, Clark Ashton Smith, Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jack Kirby, Byron set out to create his own dark fantasy universe, with tales told through epic lyrics and music. After several unsuccessful attempts to launch the project, Byron was introduced to the brothers Chris and Jonny Maudling in 1993, who were also looking to form a serious band. This formed what would become the writing core of the outfit. After several months of rehearsing, and following a line up reshuffle, the band recorded their first demo in late 1993. The band roster at this point conisited of Byron on vocals, Chris on guitar, Jonny on drums, Jason Porter on bass and Vincent Crabtree on keyboards. More of a straight ahead death metal effort with symphonic elements, the demo attracted the attention of Cacophonous Records, who signed the band to a three album deal.

The band entered Academy Music Studio in June 1994 and recorded their debut album, A Black Moon Broods Over Lemuria, in just two weeks. Due to label problems, the album was shelved for nearly a year, finally seeing the light of day in 1995. The album stands as the band's heaviest release, showcasing more traditional black metal/death metal ideas, and fewer symphonic elements. The vocal style of Byron is also slightly different from later efforts, using more traditional death metal and black metal grunts, as well as the spoken narrative passages which would become more prevalent on subsequent albums.

Starfire Burning... (1996-1997)

In 1996, Bal-Sagoth released Starfire Burning Upon the Ice-Veiled Throne of Ultima Thule, again recorded at Academy Music Studio in England. The album marked a key shift in the band's sound, now focusing more on the composition and arrangement skills of drummer (and studio keyboard player) Jonny Maudling, as well as the "storytelling" aspect of Byron's spoken-word vocals. Through keyboards, the band incorporated a virtual symphony orchestra as an equal fifth instrument, along with guitar, bass, drums and vocals. This new sound would be expanded and explored on all four of the band's later efforts.

Joined by touring keyboardist Leon Forrest and bassist Alistair MacLatchy, who had in fact been an original member of the band in its very earliest incarnation, Bal-Sagoth teamed up with Dark Funeral and Ancient in March 1997 for the "Starfire Engulfs Europe Tour" (AKA the "Satanic War Tour II"), a 23-date trek through Europe, followed by the second leg in October 1997 with the black metal band Emperor and Nocturnal Breed.

Battle Magic (1997-1999)

Bal-Sagoth spent much of 1997 writing and recording what would become the album Battle Magic. Again recorded at Academy Music Studio in England, this time the band were afforded nearly a full month to record the album. Released in March 1998, Battle Magic caught the attention of Nuclear Blast records, who signed Bal-Sagoth to a three album deal with worldwide distribution (a first for the band).
Rather than tour in support of Battle Magic, the band opted to immediately focus on the writing and recording of their Nuclear Blast debut. Frustrated with fill-in tour keyboard players, Jonny Maudling decided to focus full time on composition and live keyboards in 1999, handing drum duties over to Dave Mackintosh (later of DragonForce).

Nuclear Blast Era (1999-Present)

In 1999, Bal-Sagoth released their first album with Nuclear Blast, The Power Cosmic. Focusing on an intergalactic tale of war, cosmic empires, and celestial gods, the album pushed the band to new heights both artistically, and in popularity. After the release of The Power Cosmic, the band again disappeared, playing no shows until the release of 2001's Atlantis Ascendant.

The band resurfaced as a live act in 2001, embarking on "The Fifth Cataclysm Devours Europe: Phase 1" tour (AKA: No Mercy festival tour) with Mortician, Sinister, Vader, Amon Amarth, Marduk, God Dethroned, ...and Oceans, and Mystic Circle. Shortly after this, they embarked upon another European tour with Marduk. Later in 2002, the band played the Bloodstock indoor festival, which was followed by a short tour with Return to the Sabbat in the United Kingdom. In 2004, Dave Mackintosh left the band and joined DragonForce. He was replaced by drummer Dan Mullins, who made his debut with Bal-Sagoth at Wacken Open Air 2004.

In March 2006, Bal-Sagoth released their long awaited sixth album, The Chthonic Chronicles on Nuclear Blast records. The music was recorded entirely at Jonny Maudling's Waylands Forge Studios, while the vocals were recorded once again at the famed Academy Music Studio. The album was the band's first in five years, and is rumoured to be their last. Shortly after its release the band recruited a new drummer, Paul "Wak" Jackson, who also plays drums for Dyscaphia (formerly known as "Extreme Maggot Infestation").

In the summer of 2006, Bal-Sagoth played the Bloodstock Open Air festival, and in January 2007 they made their first trip to the USA to headline the "Heathen Crusade II" festival in St. Paul, Minnesota. In January 2008, they journeyed to Finland to play shows in Helsinki and Turku, and in November 2008 they played the Screamfest festival in Oslo, Norway. In May 2009, the band played two shows in Lisbon and Porto, Portugal.

Mythology

The Multiverse

The "Multiverse" is the alternate reality in which Byron's lyrics are set. Based on ideas similar in concept to H. P. Lovecraft, Edgar Rice Burroughs, and especially Robert E. Howard, the Multiverse is mostly past tense, wherein Byron describes ancient events that have already transpired. Worldwide floods, pan-galactic wars, rogue demigods, ancient empires and kingdoms, and sinister artifacts compose this alternate history of the earth. Mythical places such as Atlantis, Hyperborea, Ultima Thule, Ys, Mu and Lemuria feature prominently in the band's Antediluvian World. Additionally, many of the lyrics are set within the framework of recognizable history, with a cast of characters including historical barbarians, gladiators, corsairs and privateers, archaeologists and occult investigators whose exploits take place during recorded history from Roman times through the age of Reason, the late 1800s and early 1900s. Along with Byron's other, more science fiction oriented lyrics detailing a far future era of galactic struggle and interstellar war, the Bal-Sagoth lyrics span countless aeons and are truly epic in scope.
Legends of the lyrical world of Bal-Sagoth

• The Splendour of a Thousand Swords Gleaming Beneath the Blazon of the Hyperborean Empire - A three part saga wherein one of the Kings of Hyperborea is forced to meet the forces of the Chaos Lord Angsaar at the Shrine of A'zura-Kai, where they battle for control of the powerful Crystal of Mera. The King wields the mighty Shadow Sword, which was used long before by an Immortal of Ultima Thule in a battle to defeat Angsaar during his first rise to power. Featured on the albums Starfire Burning... (Pt. I), Battle Magic (Pt. II), and Atlantis Ascendant (Pt. III).

• The Obsidian Crown Saga - The tale of the warring kingdoms of Vyrgothia and The Imperium. The Imperium invades Vyrgothia, besieging the fortress of Gul-Kothoth, but the Over-King of Vyrgothia unleashes the dread Obsidian Crown, which contains arcane power and was once wielded by the Shadow King, an entity of immense power who had slumbered for many aeons. Featured on the albums Starfire Burning... and The Chthonic Chronicles.

• The battles of the tribal over-king Caylen-Tor - A barbarian warrior who forges a tenuous alliance of the tribes of his northern homeland, Caylen-Tor must lead his clansmen into battle against the overwhelming forces of the eastern Mytos K'unn empire. The decisive clash occurs at Blackhelm Vale and results in the Imperial forces being repulsed by the rag-tag tribal warhird. Featured on the album Starfire Burning...

• The Quest of Zurra for the Empyreal Lexicon - The galactic tale of Zurra, a rogue demigod (in truth an alien genetic experiment gone horribly wrong) who is released from his imprisonment beneath the Mare Imbrium, as he searches for the pieces of the powerful Empyreal Lexicon. He travels to Callisto, faces the fiends of the Z'xulth, and finally wreaks havoc on ancient Mu, but is thwarted by his clone progenitor Zuranthus and The Prime Voyager. Featured on The Power Cosmic.

• The Chronicles of the Forest-King of Darkenhold - Many tales are set within or indirectly involve the great Darkenhold forest and its mystical sylvan liege, the Forest King. Primarily allegorical in nature, the forest sagas involve such elements as the encroachment of an insidious eastern foe into the sovereign boundaries of the forest, and are also thematically linked to the story of the Draconis Albionensis and the legendary Dragon Cavalry which protected Albion from all foreign foes.

• The Guardians of the Astral Gate - These sidereal sentinels are the eternal keepers of the portal between the realm of the Z'xulth and the terran dimensions. Headed by Xuk'ul, this group of demigods is constantly summoned by aspirants in various attempts at gaining power or knowledge. Their ruthlessness when dealing with such querents is unrivaled. Other guardians include Kur'oc, Gul-Kor (these two guardians are the most popular, as they are summoned more than any other guardians), and Ka-Kur-Ra. Featured on the albums Starfire Burning..., Battle Magic, The Power Cosmic, Atlantis Ascendant, and The Chthonic Chronicles.

• The Adventures of Professor Caleb Blackthorne III - English archaeologist and specialist in conjectural antediluvian anthropology, Professor Blackthorne travels the globe in search of ancient mysteries and forbidden knowledge before ultimately falling foul of the mysterious powers that safeguard such lore from the meddlings of mankind. Featured on the albums Atlantis Ascendant, and The Chthonic Chronicles.

Many of Byron's lyrical stories are soon to be expanded into short stories and graphic novels (written by Byron and illustrated by fantasy artist Martin Hanford), and the forthcoming expanded Glossary will be the definitive A-Z of all the characters and events of the vast lyrical universe.

ARCKANUM

• Genre(s): Black Metal
• Formed: 1993
• Representative Albums: "Antikosmos," "Trulen," "Kostogher"

Few bands are as committed to their subject matter as Sweden's Arckanum, whose interest in the pagan ‘old ways' of their Viking ancestors and open worship of the God Pan transcend mere curiosity towards sheer obsession. Going so far as to compose his dark musical invocations in ancient Swedish, Arckanum's founder (and usually lone charter member), Shamaatae first broke bread with elves and trolls in 1992, but only obtained a record deal with Necropolis Records two years later on the strength of the 15-song "Trulen" demo. A proper debut, 1995's Fran Marder (meaning "From the Forest") followed, and its primitive black metal orchestrations provided a fitting background to Arckanum's eccentric lyrical musings -- as did conceptually continual follow-up efforts, 1997's Kostogher and 2000's epic double disc Kampen.

History

After been the drummer of the great black metal band CONQUEST/GROTESQUE (which now is widely known) I got into magic and Satanism. Satan was an interesting philosophy for me a while, but didn't bring all the aspects that I was looking for at the time. From the old fashion "Necronomicon" book to witchcraft to Chaos-theory, I ended up entangled in nature mysticism and old folklore. Myself and my brothers (whom participates on songs like "Bærghet" and "Gangar for Raþan Vinder") have strolled in deep forests, stood on mountains under the nights northern lights, sacrificed et cetera, in search for our true nature, realities and deities. And we found Pan - great god of nature. After years, I and my brother Sataros started a death metal band called ABSORPTION. We went on for a while but never found the real sound (probably because we sucked.) We renamed the band to DISENTERMENT and found a new guitarist named Basse. The trio recorded a demo, which is unreleased to this day. We had around twenty gigs, with Unleashed and Unanimated to name a few. DISENTERMENT died in 1993. During the ending process of DISENTERMENT I got deep into black metal (again), and started a one-man project, ARCKANUM. 1992 I was on my way to the climax of magical worlds and I had a new vision about which path I was born under, and I was very displeased with the world that I was living in. I wanted to found new thoughts for lost soldiers, to point out the direction to a world of Chaos where Pan sits upon the throne and spread Chaotic freedom to the free-thinking soldiers who do not accept to be controlled and enslaved by others, and not be able to rule over their own lives. So I started the band ARCKANUM to spread the message of Chaos. First I lone Sataros from Sartaros Grief and Loke Svarteld to join the band because I didn't think I could pull it through myself. But after the first demo "Demo-93", I continued by my own. And the only reason for why I continued by myself, was that, after a while practicing all instruments, I found out to be able to perform all, including vocals, by myself. And I recorded the second demo "Trulen" in 1994, which sold pretty good and it got some good words too. Later on the black magical path of Pan led me deeper into Satanism and eventually to gnosis of Chaos-Gnosticism. This made a huge new path for ARCKANUM and me, and the new anti-cosmic and satanic creations of ARCKANUM were made, for example "Boka Vm Kaos" and "Kaos Svarta Mar". I like it simple, fast and esoteric, and I think it fits better with the ancient tongue, therefore I chose to write all lyrics in ancient Swedish. The music itself is some kind of Black/Death Metal with lots of influences from the 80..s when music was good! I do not try to perform as complex and adept as possible; because I think that my music style shall be dirty & thrashing!

DARK FUNERAL

Formed: 1993
Genre(S): Black Metal

Dark Funeral is a black metal band from Stockholm, Sweden. They are one of the bands to have emerged in Sweden during the Second wave of black metal.
Their lyrical themes have traditionally pertained to Satanism and anti-Christianity - with Lord Ahriman and Emperor Magus Caligula being practitioners of LaVeyan Satanism. In their earlier years their lyrical themes usually revolved specifically around depictions of Hell and Satan, but since Emperor Magus Caligula joined the band their lyrics have focused more on blasphemy and anti-Christian rhetoric although there have been several exceptions to this.

History

The Secrets of the Black Arts

Dark Funeral was founded by guitarists Blackmoon (David Parland) and Lord Ahriman in 1993. Shortly afterwards drummer Draugen and bassist and vocalist Themgoroth joined the band. Their self-titled and self-financed album, Dark Funeral, was recorded in 1994 at Dan Swanö's Uni-Sound studio in January. It was released on May 4, the same day the band performed their first gig at Luse Lottes Pub in Oslo, Norway alongside bands such as fellow live debut band Gorgoroth and Marduk (who performed their first show abroad). After the recording sessions, Draugen left the band and was replaced by Equimanthorn.

In 1995, the band signed up to No Fashion Records and started preparing songs for a full-length album. After an attempt to record The Secrets of the Black Arts at Uni-Sound studios (again with Dan Swanö), the band decided to relocate to Abyss Studio and re-record the entire album. During the break between studio sessions, the band wrote the song When Angels Forever Die. With engineer Peter Tägtgren (Hypocrisy) on board, the band finally got the production they were looking for. Shortly after, Dark Funeral played their first festival gig, Under The Black Sun I in Berlin. A few weeks prior to this gig Emperor Magus Caligula (Magnus 'Masse' Broberg, the original vocalist of Hypocrisy) replaced Themgoroth and eventually became a permanent member. The band also shot their first video for the track "The Secrets Of The Black Arts", which was well received and played on music channels all over the world. On January 28, 1996, the band's first full-length-album, The Secrets Of The Black Arts, was released and the album was soon licensed to Metal Blade (North America) and Mystic Production (Poland). Equimanthorn was soon replaced by Alzazmon (Tomas Asklund, later renowned for his work with Dissection and Gorgoroth). The line-up of Emperor Magus Caligula, Lord Ahriman, Alzazmon and Blackmoon recorded their versions of Bathory's Call From The Grave and Equimanthorn for the Bathory tribute, In Conspiracy With Satan.(These also appeared later re-mastered for the re-titled re-release of the band's debut In The Sign…). Blackmoon eventually left and founded War a year later. Together with Necromass, the band embarked on the Satanic War Tour I throughout Europe.

Vobiscum Satanas

The second leg of the Satanic War Tour followed with Ancient and Bal Sagoth as support. Dark Funeral played their first show in America at the Expo Of The Extreme festival in Chicago. From there, the band embarked on the The American Satanic Crusade Tour with Usurper in support. Originally, the tour was supposed to also feature Acheron and Deströyer 666, but both bands cancelled. In September, the band returned to the Abyss studio to record Vobiscum Satanas.

The Ineffable Kings Of Darkness Tour with Enthroned and Liar Of Golgotha took place with Dominion joining the band as a session bass player. The band also made their second major festival appearance at the Swedish Hultsfreds festival. After the festival, Typhos was fired and Dominion, who originally was a guitarist, was taken on as the band's second guitarist, and Caligula reverted to doing both vocals and bass.

Before the band headed out on the Bleed For Satan tour with Cannibal Corpse and Infernäl Mäjesty, Alzazmon left, and the band's long time friend Gaahnfaust, who was also in the band back in 1996 for a short time, was recruited. The band returned overseas for another mini-tour Black Plague Across The West, when they played in Mexico for the first time before they headed to the US and the state of California. Afterwards, they also embarked on their longest and most successful European tour, The Satanic Inquisition, together with Dimmu Borgir.

With engineer Tommy Tägtgren, the band recorded the EP Teach Children to Worship Satan at the Abyss studio B (featuring the new song An Apprentice Of Satan and cover-versions from Slayer, Mayhem, Sodom and King Diamond). For the EP, the band also filmed a live video for An Apprentice Of Satan. They joined Deicide, Immortal, and Cannibal Corpse for the No Mercy Festivals. After the departure of Gaahnfaust, Matte Modin (Defleshed) joined the band as a permanent member and made his debut at the
With Full Force festival.

Diabolis Interium

In January/February the band again entered Abyss Studio, enlisting the help of producer Peter Tägtgren and studio technician Lars Szöke, to record their third full-length album, Diabolis Interium. Due to the overwhelming positive response to the new album from both the public and the press, the band were able to secure deals that brought their music across to a much wider audience, with licenses in Japan (Soundholic Co. Ltd), Brazil (Hellion Records), Poland (Mystic Productions), Romania (Rocris Disc), Bulgaria (Rocris Disc), Thailand (S.Stack Co. Ltd), Russia (Irond Records Ltd), Taiwan, Hong Kong, and China (Magnus Music). With the exceptional response to the album in Brazil, which was released through Hellion Records, another local label, Somber Records licensed the band's entire back catalogue. As soon as Diabolis Interium was released, Dark Funeral once again went on tour. First they toured Europe, supported by Tidfall (NO), Anorexia Nervosa (FR) and Ragnarok (NO). On this tour, the band brought in Mikael Hedlund (Hypocrisy) to play the bass. After this tour, Mikael resumed duties with his main band. They recruited Richard Cabeza for the session bassist slot. The band also toured the US, supporting their long time friends Cannibal Corpse. With Diabolis Interium, the Swedish radio station ROCKET 95.3 FM nominated Dark Funeral in the category “Best Swedish Hardrock Band”. Other bands nominated at the same time and in the same category were Breach, Entombed, and Arise.

In October 2002, the band embarked on their first tour in the Far East, which included shows in Japan, Taiwan, and Singapore. The band was the first western extreme metal band to play Taiwan and Singapore. On November 29, 2002, the band and MNW/No Fashion Records announced that they were no longer contractually-bound to Necropolis Records, who had licensed the band's 2001 release Diabolis Interium for North America. Official Termination of contract papers had already been delivered to Necropolis Records, putting an official end of Dark Funeral's tenure with said record label. This was a result of Necropolis' alleged breach of contract with the band and label.

After the Asian tour, guitarist Dominion felt it was in the best interests of both the band and himself to resign his position, due to commitment to studies. Dominion officially resigned upon the band's completion of their Asian tour. He would later explore other musical options. After this the band begin auditioning guitarists to replace the departed Dominion. A new guitarist was found in the form of Chaq Mol, who had a long history in different local metal acts. He is also in the two-man doom/black metal project Mordichrist. He made his official debut with the band at Wacken Open Air 2003.

De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine

After a successful gig at the Wacken Open Air Festival in Germany, the band headed down to South America for a tour through Brazil, Chile, and Colombia. This tour became one of the most successful ever undertaken by the band. During the tour, the band recorded a couple of the shows with plans to release a live album. After sifting through the recorded material with their live sound engineer (Erik Lidbom, Hitfire Productions), De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine was born.

Dark Funeral officially announced their split from MNW/No Fashion Records, after the band did not receive royalties for their back-catalogue. A series of legal battles began, where Ahriman and Caligula sought the rights to Dark Funeral's back-catalogue. Shortly after, the band signed a license deal with Regain Records for their live album De Profundis Clamavi Ad Te Domine, which was licensed to several other countries. On May 31st, 2005 the album was released in the US through Candlelight USA.

In January 2004 the band partnered with Goatwhore (US) and Zyklon (NO) in Japan on the Extreme The Dojo Volume 9. Shortly after, the band continued to tour with a spate of Mexican dates. The band made appearances at festivals including Spanish Piorno Rock (w/ Sepultura, Saxon, Destruction, Lacuna Coil among others), Finnish Tuska, and X-Mass Festivals. The band appeared as the headlining act at Germany's Party San, Swedish Nordic Rage, and LA's Gathering Of The Bestial Legions Festival. The band also played in Italy together with Defleshed for a short, but extremely successful burst of dates. In December 2004, Dark Funeral then resumed touring by first playing Israel, and then hitting Russia and Ukraine for the Black Winter Days Tour, together with Horned NecroCannibals and Icewind Blast.
Attera Totus Sanctus

On January 20, 2005, they signed a new record deal with Regain Records. The band concentrated on writing material for a new full-length album, yet still managed to perform at the Metal Mind Festival in Poland, before finally joining the No Mercy Tour with Six Feet Under, Nile, and Dying Fetus, among others.

On May 23, the band entered Dug Out Studios together with producer Daniel Bergstrand and Örjan Örnkloo to begin work on their next full-length album. The band brought in Gustaf Hielm (ex Meshuggah) to play the bass on the record. On August 18, Dark Funeral's next album, Attera Totus Sanctus, was completed. The album was well-received by the metal community. It entered the Swedish top 40 at number 35 and the Swedish Heavy Metal chart at number 3, an aberration for a black metal record. In November, Dark Funeral began working with Dragon Production, a division of A.S.S. Concert & Promotion GmbH. Dragon Production were entrusted with handling the band's tour bookings.

In Autumn 2006, Dark Funeral performed on a tour in South America. On October 8, 2006, at a concert in Lima, Peru, Dark Funeral were forced to perform without their vocalist and bassist, Caligula, due to illness. Many angry fans started a riot, and vandalized the properties near the venue. Following the riot, all the band's instruments were confiscated by Peruvian police. After a week, the band announced they had to postpone their upcoming concerts in Latvia and Lithuania because of this unfortunate situation.

In early 2007, Dark Funeral toured North America with Enslaved. In April 2007, the band had planned an Eastern European tour to Russia, Ukraine, and Baltic states. It was around this time that Matte Modin had allegedly concocted false stories in order to avoid playing with the band. He first alleged that he had an infection in his arm, and could not participate on the Eastern European tour. However, it emerged that he had chosen to tour with the punk band Raised Fist instead. After returning from the Metalferry show in Sweden in between, Matte announced to the rest of the band that he couldn't go to the Baltic states, as it was his son's birthday. Dark Funeral soon realised Matte Modin's motives. Consequently, the upcoming tour was cancelled, and Matte Modin was ejected from the band. In June 2007, the band announced Nils Fjellström, alias Dominator (also in Aeon and Sanctification, among others) as their new drummer.

The band toured North America again in Autumn 2007, and re-issued their first three albums, each with a bonus disc of material; The Secrets Of The Black Arts, Vobiscum Satanas and Diabolis Interium. In the autumn seasons of 2007 and 2008, the band released Attera Orbis Terrarum - Part I and Attera Orbis Terrarum - Part II respectively.

On 24th October 2008, it was announced that the Supreme Court of Sweden had ruled in favour of Dark Funeral in the dispute with MNW/No Fashion Records.

1349

Formed: 1997
Genre(S): Black Metal
Representative Albums: 1349 , Liberation, Beyond the Apocalypse,Hellfire, Revelations of the Black Flame (2009)

1349 is a Norwegian black metal band from Oslo, Norway, formed in 1997. The band's musical style and songwriting is modeled after that of bands from the Second Wave of Norwegian black metal of the early 1990s, and notably does not incorporate synthesizers. As a result, 1349 have been compared to the early incarnations of Enslaved, Darkthrone, Immortal, and Mayhem, previously being described as much heavier than most other black metal bands. The band rejected the more commercial style of black metal exhibited by some bands, however their latest studio album Revelations of the Black Flame shows a "new musical direction" for 1349, as it often incorporates a more ambient and "slower sound.

The name 1349 comes from the year the Black Death reached Norway.

History

1349 formed in 1997 and comprises several former members of the band Alvheim. Their drummer, Frost is also a member of Satyricon.

1349 tour on a regular basis; their live shows often begin with fire-breathing. In recognition of their influences, the band performed a cover of Mayhem's "Buried by Time and Dust" on their debut album, Liberation. At their live shows they have also covered Celtic Frost, the band that vocalist Ravn cites as his principal influence.

In 2006, they toured the USA with Celtic Frost. Ravn also appeared on Celtic Frost's 2006 album, Monotheist, performing guest vocals on the CD digi-pack bonus track, Temple of Depression. In 2007, during the French Hellfest festival, they were slated to play during the day, but asked to reschedule their appearance to play in the dark instead. During their appearance at the Oslo Inferno Metal Festival on March 2008, the band was joined on stage by Celtic Frost frontman Tom Gabriel Fischer for a rendition of the Celtic Frost song "The Usurper".

In September 2008 they toured with Carcass, Suffocation, Aborted and Rotten Sound titled as the Exhume to Consume Tour.

A music video of 1349's song 'Sculptor of Flesh' was released following the band's 2005 album, Hellfire. The video, directed by Judd Tilyard not by the fictional "Don Budd" as reported by MTV, alternates between footage of the band performing the song in Norway and clips of surgery filmed in Australia.

During the winter of 2008 the band recorded their long awaited fourth album Revelations Of the Black Flame. The album is co-mixed by Tom Gabriel Fischer and has a European release date of 25th of May 2009. Revelations of the Black Flame marks a change in direction for the band as songs on the album are slower than previous releases and there are also some dark ambient and industrial tinged tracks.

SKINLESS

• Formed: 1994, New York, NY
• Genre(s): Brutal Death Metal
• Representative Albums: "From Sacrifice to Survival," "Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead," "Foreshadowing Our Demise"

Biography

New York grindcore merchants Skinless were formed in 1992 by vocalist Sherwood Webber and guitarist Noah Carpenter. Undergoing countless line-up changes early on, the band finally stabilized with the arrival of bassist Joe Keyser and drummer Bobby Dulac prior to recording 1998's independently released Progressions Towards Evil debut. The album scored high marks with both fans and critics, and constant touring behind acts like Mortician and Incantation led to a deal with Relapse Records, for whom they recorded their second opus, Foreshadowing our Demise in 2001. By then, the band had begun adding discreet melodies and varied rhythms to their once furiously full-speed assault, and 2003's much improved From Sacrifice to Survival (featuring Origin drummer John Longstreth temporarily stepping in for the sessions while Dulac tied the knot) took this evolution even further.

History:

Skinless is a Brutal death metal band from Troy, New York. The band was formed in founded in 1992 by Ryan Wade and Noah Carpenter. They are known for their consistently intense performances, as well as for their lyrical mix of end-of-the-world cynicism and toilet humor. These lyrical themes are demonstrated in songs such as "The Optimist," about a crumbling human society, and "Tug of War Intestines," which depicts children playing schoolyard games with a surgery patient's internal organs. Recently, in a display of violent misogyny, the band has occasionally brought the "Skinless Girl” on stage and let her be roughed up, covered in fake blood, while the band performed.

Their 1998 debut album, Progression Towards Evil, was an independent release and has garnered them high praise by metal critics They have released four albums, their most recent being Trample the Weak, Hurdle the Dead in 2006.

NECROPHAGIST

Formed: 1992,Karlsruhe, Baden-Württemberg, Germany
Genre(S): Tech Death
Representative Albums: Onset of Putrefaction and Epitaph

Necrophagist (Greek for "eater of the dead") is a German death metal band, founded and fronted by Turkish-German guitarist/vocalist Muhammed Suiçmez. The band is known for its rapid and technical compositions, as well as classical influence.
The name originates from the Greek root words "nekros" ("dead body") and "phagous" ("to eat, eater of").

History

Necrophagist's debut album Onset of Putrefaction has been out of print for years. Muhammed was never satisfied in full by the sound of the album. The percussion on the album was handled by a drum machine. Eventually, a new edition with drum samples recorded by Hannes Grossmann was created. All of the old guitar, bass guitar, and vocal tracks were mixed along with the brand new drum samples, to create a crisp and clear stereo track. The re-release also features two songs from Necrophagist's 1995 self-titled demo tape. The whole album was also engineered by long time Necrophagist engineer and producer Christoph Brandes at The Iguana Studios. It was mastered by Bob Katz at "Digital Domain", Orlando, Florida. The re-release was issued in 2004 by Willowtip Records in America/Canada and Relapse Records in the rest of the world.
On the 10th of February, 2006 it was announced that Christian Muenzner had departed the band due to 'scheduling conflicts'. Later on he joined the technical death metal band Obscura. A replacement guitarist has been found, Sami Raatikainen, who is from Helsinki, Finland. Sami also plays in the band "Codeon". The band was on hiatus from March 2005 to June 2005, due to Muhammed Suiçmez being ill.

Necrophagist has begun to work on its next album with new drummer Romain Goulon.
In 2006 the band did an American (Canadian dates were cancelled) tour called "Carving North America's Epitaph". Necrophagist was joined on this tour by Arsis, Alarum, Neuraxis, Ion Dissonance, Cattle Decapitation and Thine Eyes Bleed. They, along with Dying Fetus, supported Cannibal Corpse on their US tour in the fall, which also included some Canadian venues.

In 2007 the band announced on its MySpace page that after the 2007 California Metalfest, drummer Hannes Grossmann would leave the band. Hannes stated that he was unable to commit to the band's full-time touring schedule. Marco Minnemann (who has played with Paul Gilbert, Terry Bozzio, Chad Wackerman) was the official permanent replacement for Hannes.

Necrophagist was a headlining act for The Summer Slaughter Tour in 2007, which featured a wide variety of other extreme metal bands including Decapitated, Arsis, The Faceless, Cephalic Carnage, As Blood Runs Black, Cattle Decapitation and many more. Arsis, however, had to cancel numerous shows due to an incident with its bus in Sacramento.

In April 2008, Necrophagist announced that Romain Goulon would be joining the band as their new drummer, replacing Minnemann, who would still be working with Suiçmez on a side project.

Necrophagist played in the Pillage the Village Tour in 2008 from August 26th 2008 to September 10th 2008 with death metal bands Dying Fetus and Beneath the Massacre and deathcore band Veil of Maya. Shows in some areas also included Carcass, Suffocation, 1349, and Aborted.

The band is writing a new, yet untitled album. Suiçmez stated that the band would be using seven-string guitars on the album. Muhammed himself will be recording with a new custom shop Ibanez Xiphos guitar with 7 strings, as well as 27 frets.
On the 2009 US Summer Slaughter Tour, the band previewed a song titled "Dawn and Demise" from their upcoming album. This song was performed with 7 String guitars. Sami Raatikainen is now an Ibanez Guitar endorsee, using a 7 String RG-Series guitar on stage.
Necrophagist headlined the Canadian leg of the 2009 Summer Slaughter due to Behemoth being held at the United States border for not filling out new documentation.

Carpathian Forest

• Genre(s): Black Metal
• Representative Albums: "Strange Old Brew," "Defending the Throne of Evil," "Bloodlust & Perversion"

Biography

Emerging like ghoulish demons out of the depths of Norway's darkest woods (at least, that's how they would have dreamed it), Carpathian Forest centers around the fearsome duo of Nattefrost (vocals/guitar/bass) and Nordavind (guitar/bass), who first teamed up to compose their dark musical sorcery in the early '90s. A textbook example of so-called "true" black metal in the old-school Scandinavian definition (serious devil worship, pagan rituals, corpse face paint, criminal record recommended), Carpathian Forest recorded a set of fittingly appalling early demos, beginning with 1992's notorious Bloodlust & Perversion tape (reissued on CD in 1997). Quickly becoming a hot item on the underground tape-trading network thanks to its incredibly primitive, lo-fi contents, the demo garnered the new group almost instant cult status, starting them on their path to black metal infamy. After showing a vast technical improvement with the next year's Journey Through the Cold Moors of Svarttjern, the duo scored a deal with the Avant Garde label, for whom they recorded 1995's Through Chasm, Caves and Titan Woods with the help of some local scene friends. The release couldn't have arrived at a more propitious time, as the recent imprisonment of Burzum's Varg Vikernes for the murder of the legendary Mayhem and "Inner Circle" leader Euronymous had left thousands of black metal fans searching for new heroes to worship. Carpathian Forest was as poised to capitalize on the situation as anyone, but the band vanished from sight instead, not be heard from again for nearly three years. The reasons behind this disappearance remain as mysterious as the band itself, but 1998's Black Shining Leather proved to be a surprisingly powerful comeback, making it seem like the band had never been gone at all and featuring a stunning cover of the Cure's "A Forest." Nordavind left the band under reportedly amicable circumstances shortly after the recording of 2000's Strange Old Brew, but Carpathian Forest still plans to forge ahead with its career.

HISTORY:

Carpathian Forest is a Norwegian black metal band formed by Nattefrost and Nordavind in 1990.

Carpathian Forest's lyrics deal with themes such as Satanism, evil, anti-Christianity, sodomy, sadism, sexual depravity and suicide.
Carpathian Forest is enjoying near cult status in the scene. Emerged at first with the demo tape "Bloodlust & Perversion" (1992), they received sudden enthusiastic responses from the underground. Their obsessive, morbid and grim sound has always been a firm trademark. In 1993 the band released a second demo "Journey through the cold moors of Svarttjern", showing also a new approach to atmospheric, but still glacial tunes. These tapes quickly became coveted items in underground tape traders networks. One year later, Forest signed to Avantgarde Music and recorded their first mini album, the black metal classic "Through chasm, caves and titan woods" (1995).
In 1998, Carpathian Forest came back with a successful release, after three years of silence. The new work is titled "Strange Old Brew" (produced by Terje Refsnes in Sound Suite studios), and an additional one is yet to be released - "Morbid Fascination Of Death", a second piece in this 2-set concept. There has been some change: Nordavind has left the band, and there is a new guest drummer, A. Kobro (from ... In The Woods). Also helping out is Tchort (ex-Emperor, ex-Satyricon, Blood Red Throne etc.) on guitar and now Vrangsinn (of World Destroyer) has taken over the duties of bassist and synth programmer Nordavind. The album "Black Shining Leather" has been a top seller at Avantgarde Music for 2 years.
